As one of the embassadors of Hartman mods, I can tell you that on the drawing he sent me there WAS this filler/insulation/glass mat in the end. I have used an oxygen/acetylen cutting torch to get the endplates off. Everything else is a waste of time and energy.
The mods seem to reduce the backfiring, but is not eliminating it.
I just checked my sparkplug today, after a 1000 mile trip last weekend - perfect beige colour. I have the original airfilter and main jet 175. Fuel consumption 4,3 liters per 100 kilometers.
This indicates that you don't have to re-jet your carb after doing the mods. But everybody should of course check their plugs shortly after the mods are made to control that the mixture is ok. If the plug is brightwhite you're running too lean, if it is very dark brown or black you're running too rich. Beige is perfect.
Good luck with the mods !
